Reading out data of water stations (AIVE)

Water station

Ventilation basin
Working of the water station
The polluted water is transported by pipes to 4 "Archimedes" screws. Once the water is hauled up, it goes to a kind of mechanical grid. The stopped waste is automatically collected and then sent to a container by means of a conveyor belt. Sand (by sedimentation) and greases (by flotation) are removed by certain systems.

The flow meter restricts the maximum acceptable flow for biological treatment. The surplus flow is put up in a 'storm basin'.

In dry periods this is emptied out so that this water can undergo the same biological treatment. The water meant for the biological treatment is sent on to a decanting machine. This round basin disposes of a kind of bridge that turns around to scrape off the sunk silt at the bottom.

After these physical treatments, the water flows to a ventilation basin. The micro-organisms that are present in the polluted water, develop in the presence of oxygen. They consume the biodegradable pollution in the water. This process is called 'the activated silt'. Certain pumps put air at the bottom of the basin. By means of air distributors 'little bubbles of air' are put in. The produced microbes form the so-called biological silt. A probe with oxygen is installed in the middle of the basin to continuously tune the oxygen percentage to the needs. This probe is controlled by an HPC® (High Performance Controller) of E.D.&A. that is able to automatically switch on various pumps.

The final phase of the process consists of separating the cleaned water and the biological silt. The step is executed by a second decanting machine.

Circuit of the silt:

Mud pid for drain lorries
The recycled silt in the first decanting machine and the produced silt in the ventilation basin are transported to an evaporating installation to be sure of a sufficient concentration for the 'biogas process'. The silt is then sent to a fermentation tank that is heated up to 33°C. In this tank a part of the organic material in the silt is transformed in methane and permits to reduce additional fermentation. The methane or 'biogas' is saved in a gasholder and afterwards it is for example used for the gas boilers of the heating in the building. Moreover the water station has a mud pit to dump the content of drain lorries. This material is also treated in the water treatment station.

Automation:
The water treatment station is separated in different zones. Each zone is monitored by a HPC® of E.D.&A. Each HPC® is programmed so that a safe functioning is guaranteed. Each process can be managed and adjusted via a touchscreen, via the local supervisor as well as at a distance.

Required systems on the site:
  • HPC® for the automation of the silt channels
  • HPC® for the automation of the regulation of the ventilation basin
  • HPC® for the automation of the process at the beginning of the water treatment station (haul of water, storm basin, etc)
  • HPC® for the receiving devices for the silt of the drain lorries
  • HPC® for the regulation of the pump process in the water station (storage of waste)
  • HPC® to gather information, network management, communication with the supervising part (touchscreen, supervisor, etc)
  • Telecontrol Systems® take care of the alarm messages and the remote communication with the supervisor
The network consists of connections by coax cable (V-net®), RS232, RS485 and by radio waves. Through the architecture of the network and the quality of the automation systems they are able to control at a distance via a remote supervisor.
